Developing Visual Basic 4.0 Programs for the Internet with ActiveX Controls
by Wayne S. Freeze

THE MARKET:

On 14 March 1996, Microsoft announced the availability of a beta test version of the Internet Control Pack, a set of Internet ActiveX Controls, which will allow developers "…to rapidly integrate Internet functionality into their development projects." According to Microsoft vice president of developer tools, Bob Muglia, "A major goal for Microsoft is to bring the 4.5 million developers for Windows to the Internet."

At this time, there are no other books on the market that discuss ActiveX. It would be naïve to expect that there are no other books being written on this topic. However, since this book would be one of the first available, it should sell well to those programmers that wish to learn the new ActiveX technology.

There are several magazines such as Microsoft Interactive Developer, Visual Basic Programmer's Journal and The Visual Basic/Access Advisor that would be likely to discuss the ActiveX controls, though in much less depth that can be covered in a book.

VBITS '96 International is a conference sponsored by Microsoft and Fawcette Technical Publications (Visual Basic Programmer's Journal) to discuss key technologies and tools for Visual Basic. Among the main topics that will be discussed will be Visual Basic tools to access the Internet and other client/server tools. It is scheduled for 24-26 June 1996 in New York, and 25-27 September 1996 in Orlando, plus other dates in London, Tokyo and Germany.
