Developing Visual Basic 4.0 Programs for the Internet with ActiveX Controls
by Wayne S. Freeze

OVERVIEW:

Is your mail program too complex?

Don't like the program you use to read news?

Hate how your web browser handles bookmarks?

If you know Visual Basic and Windows 95, and have an Internet connection, then it is easy for you to solve these and other problems. Microsoft's new ActiveX technology combines the power of the Internet with the ease of programming in Visual Basic to give you the tools to quickly and easily write your own Internet programs.

Written for the intermediate level Visual Basic programmer, Developing Visual Basic 4.0 Programs for the Internet with ActiveX Controls begins with a discussion of the how programs communicate across the Internet. It then presents the ActiveX controls that allow you to transfer files using an FTP file server, read news using an NNTP news server, receive mail using a POP mail server, send mail using an SMTP mail server, retrieve web pages using an HTTP web server, and display web pages written in HTML Finally, the WinSock controls necessary to write your own clients and server are presented with an easy to understand program you can use to talk to other Internet users. While it's not likely that these programs will replace their commercial counterparts, they do give insight into how those programs work.

Complete source code is supplied on CD-ROM along with a copy of the ActiveX controls. All you need to add is a Windows 95 computer system with a SLIP or PPP Internet connection, Visual Basic 4.0 Professional Edition, and you're all set. Your mastery of Internet programming awaits!
